Who is Terri Schiavo? (Day Class)

Try to enlighten the class on who Terri Schiavo is and how she relates to the 5th and 14th amendment. Find two video sources that you think best describe Terri Schiavo's case and give a short defense on why you feel others should watch these videos.  (Hint:  Here is a chance to check out a wiki to get a sense of what you'll be researching).  I'm excited to see what you find as my own knowledge is limited in this subject!

  1. Terry Schiavo was a disabled women who lost numerous court battles to save her life. A court ruled that she was in a vegetative state and therefore she could not say whether she wanted to live or die. She relates to the amendments because of the courts and the legal system to overturn a verdict. I encourage everyone to watch these videos because it has a very strong point and shows about the legal process and how it can fail and not save human life. I think the story was very sad and has changed my views on the legal system.

Not sure how to post videos

Terri Schiavo was a woman who had a heart attack and suffered severe brain damage from a lack of oxygen in her brain for about 7 minutes. Before this happened she had mentioned that if anything, were to have happened to her and she were have ended up in any type of vegetative state she would not want to live like that. But her family argued that she was making progress and that there was hope for her to come back. Schiavos case relates to the 4th & 15th amendment because, over all, the court system was trying to decided on weather or not she should live.

The courts couldn't decide if she should live or pull the plug. I think that people should watch these videos because it shortens up her story in 15 min and explains exactly what happened to her. And how it all started.

  5. Terri was a woman who collapsed at home and oxygen was cut off to her brain for several minutes. She ended up having brain damage. Terri’s husband, blames a cardiac arrest induced by a potassium imbalance associated with bulimia. The 5th amendment is "the Federal Government not deprive individuals of "life, liberty, or property," without due process." And the 14th amendment is "explicitly prohibits states from violating an individual's rights of due process and equal protection." This has to do with her case because some of her family wants here to live and then the other is saying that she wanted to die because when her grandma was on life support she said that she would never want to live that way. You should watch this video( its in 5 parts) because it tells you about her story and what the family had to go through.

  6. Terri Shiavo was a woman who had a eating disorder and the end result was her having a heart attack that left her with only being able to use 20 percent of her brain. Terri's parents wanted to keep her alive believing that she was recovering but since she was married her husband was the one who had the last say. This case involves the 14th amendment because the state and local government has no power over what should happen to Terri.

  7. Terri Schiavo is a young girl who had severe brain damage. Her condition was so bad that she was hospitalized and had to be fed with a tube. The government felt that there was no point in continuing to provide the food supply for Terri when she could not even communicate with anyone. So they decided to cut off her food supply by no longer providing her with her feeding tube. Terri and her family had no say. So Terri's feeding tube was cut off until she starved to death. Terri's case relates to the 5th and fourteenth amendment because she has the right to life.
